The Pursuit of Peace

How many times have you said, or heard someone else say, "I just want to be happy?” It's a common aspiration, but the concept of happiness varies from person to person. Are we all seeking a permanent state of happiness? Is that why we strive so hard to accomplish things or continually search for sources of pleasure? Are we trying to maintain a state of happiness at all times?

But what does all this striving produce? Chasing success often brings stress, exhaustion, sleepless nights, self-doubt, and a sense of failure. I'm not saying you can't find happiness in success or in your relationships, but there's something more profound to pursue.

Have you ever met someone who seems to be in a constant state of happiness? I would argue that they are not happy all the time; instead, they are at peace.

The pursuit of peace is a noble endeavor. In the Bible (Romans 8:6), it is written, "For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace." This verse reminds us that true life and lasting peace are found when we align our minds with the Spirit of God.

It further emphasizes that faith and belief in God can lead us to a state of abounding joy and peace. But we need to actively pursue it.

Psalm 34:14 advises us to "Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it." It's a reminder that peace is not passive; it requires active pursuit.

In Romans 14:19, we are encouraged to "pursue what makes for peace and for mutual up building." Peace benefits not only ourselves but also those around us.

1 John 2:16-17 warns against loving the world's desires and pride. It reminds us that “worldly pursuits are temporary, while those who do the will of God abide forever.” True and lasting peace can only be found through aligning ourselves with God's will.

Peace is not something we can achieve through our own efforts; it comes through Jesus. The constant pursuit of happiness, as defined by the world, often leads to chaos, dissatisfaction, frustration, depression, loneliness, poor self-esteem, and an unending yearning for fulfillment that is never quite reached.

On the other hand, the constant pursuit of peace, as defined by God, grants us abundant life. In adversity, we find joy. We know we are never alone. We have the strength of God to face challenges, His love to build others up, and a peace of mind that surpasses all understanding.

So, let us shift our focus from the fleeting pursuit of happiness to the enduring pursuit of peace, found only through our faith and connection with God. In doing so, we can experience a life filled with joy, contentment, and a deep sense of purpose, regardless of the circumstances that surround us.
