Relying on What’s Reliable: Finding Security in an Uncertain World

We all need someone we can rely on in life—it’s part of being human. Whether it’s family, friends, or mentors, having someone we trust gives us a sense of security and stability. But what happens when those people—no matter how well-intentioned—let us down?

We’ve all experienced moments of disappointment, the times when we counted on someone, and they couldn’t come through for us. That hurt, that feeling of being let down, can create layers of insecurity within us. It’s natural. We start to protect ourselves, building walls, guarding our hearts, and trying to avoid being disappointed again. Sometimes, those protective measures serve us well. But other times, they can isolate us, keeping us from experiencing the depth of connection we truly need.

Here’s the thing: we will always need trustworthy people to help us navigate life. No one is meant to walk this journey alone. However, people are fallible, and as much as we might want to rely on them, there will be times they come up short. So, where do we turn when those moments come? Who do we lean on when it feels like no one else is there?

The answer is simple, though sometimes hard to fully grasp: God.

God promises to be the one who is always there for us. He is completely reliable. Unlike humans, He cannot lie, fail, or break His promises. But here’s where many of us struggle: because we’ve been disappointed by others, it can be hard to trust God completely. After all, we’ve been let down before—why should this be any different?

Yet, God is patient. He doesn’t demand blind trust but invites us to lean on Him according to the measure of faith He gives. He understands our hesitations and is more than willing to prove Himself faithful in our lives. Each time we take a step of faith and rely on Him, He shows us just how reliable He truly is.

The Key to Trusting God: Knowing Who He Is

But how do we come to trust God, especially when trust doesn’t come easy after experiencing disappointment? The key is this: we cannot trust someone we don’t know.

That’s why it’s so important to learn about who God says He is. Just like any relationship, the more we get to know Him, the more we can see His character unfold. And the way to know God is by reading His Word. The Bible is full of His promises, His attributes, and His faithful track record across generations. As you spend time reading about God—what He’s done and what He says He will do—you begin to realize something amazing and transformative: God can be trusted.

In His Word, God reveals His love, His power, His mercy, and His faithfulness. You’ll find stories of people just like you, who faced insecurity, disappointment, and fear, but found peace and strength when they chose to trust in God.

As you grow in your understanding of who He is, your faith will deepen. You’ll see that God is not like those who may have let you down. He keeps His promises because He has the power and the desire to do so. He is able to fulfill everything He says.

So, if you’re feeling insecure today—wondering if there’s anyone you can truly count on—consider this: the one who made you, the one who knows every part of your story, is the one who can provide the support you need. God is capable, and He’s waiting to show you just how trustworthy He really is.

Take that first step, spend time getting to know Him, and let Him prove His faithfulness to you. The more you know God, the more you’ll trust Him—and that trust will transform your life.

If you have felt God has been the one who has let you down, that is a big deal. We would love to talk to you about it and unpack what has happened to cause you to avoid him. We’d love to hear your story.
